Where were you when you finally felt the reward of satisfaction, from achieving the seemingly unachievable? Everyone at some point in their lives or at many points feels satisfied. I have been sensing a feeling of satisfaction from perusing being a doula. It really embraces my life’s work, (having babies). In reflection of my life recently I realized that I have been pregnant, nursing, raising children, and learning about birth for over 12 years now. I realized that it had inadvertently become my life’s work. Even my work as a Pastor has predominantly been in ministering to children & their parents. My dissatisfaction with my first two births really propelled me to find out why this seemingly natural process of childbirth, had become anything but!
My goal was to get pregnant again (with a boy this time) and give birth at home 100% natural. I did a lot of reading, researching, question asking, and found a (that’s 1) midwife in my local area. We met, I loved her! She embraced all of what I had to say and supported me all the way! We did deviate just a little from my original plan. She suggested that since her transfer hospital was over 30 minutes from my home that I birth at her birth center just a few minutes from the hospital. I agreed knowing that it would be better to be closer to a hospital given my history. (Which I will get into detail about another time) On January 29th, 2006 5 days past my due date, I woke up with contractions, I knew they were different, I got up, called my midwife, and she said “looks like we’re going to have a baby today!” That was 6:30 a.m. My precious SON was born almost exactly 3 hours later, 20 minutes, after a mad dash to the birth center! It was my moment of satisfaction, It was completely natural, 100% beautiful, my husband caught him, my doula took pictures and my 2 other children arrived with one of my best friends just minutes after he arrived! It was a moment in my life the forever defined how I felt about how God created us to be fruitful and multiply! It redefined my idea of natural childbirth and set in motion a passion to educate and assist Every Woman™ (who will let me) in their pursuit of a moment of satisfaction in who they are and what they have been created to do, as woman.
