Doula: A professional woman experienced and educated in childbirth who provides education, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother; before, during and after birth.
Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier, and are more likely to use breastfeeding instincts at birth.
Studies have shown the positive effects of having support during labor can give. A doula is a person who is not only trained but also has an innate ability to provide a laboring woman with the emotional, physical, spiritual, and psychological support she needs to have the birth she desires.
In another time and place where there were not as many types of vehicles to choose from more of us drove the same type of car. Well the birthing industry has had so many makes and models introduced so now your "typical" birth is almost non-existent. Birth has become institutional, many OB's are trying to create a "norm" for something that is anything but. Women of all ethnicity's, social standings, economical back grounds and family surroundings have often come to the harsh realization that what they thought was going to be a "typical birth" turned out to be anything but what they expected it to be.
Unsuspecting women go into labor; go to the hospital, expecting to give birth, and almost as soon as they walk through the door some type of medical intervention is being introduced. Or an equally common situation, of a very determined woman who went to the hospital predetermined to birth naturally soon found that their was not consistent help available to her. She is left laboring through an increasingly intense process, without the support it takes to feel confident things are going well. Soon these women find themselves faced with making uninformed medical decisions at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives, and more often than not women fall prey to a lack of knowledge, and make decisions they later regret.
What happens next is the thing that sticks with most women for the rest of their lives; It is often referred to as the "why”. Why did I, Why didn't I, Why did they, Why didn't they, Why can't we, WHY! You might be asking what caused all the whys? Well generally when you give in to one intervention you get trapped into another and sometimes another and so on. In the doula community this is referred to as the cascade of interventions.
During a time that should be most fulfilling, the mother can be left feeling they had no choice when in fact they weren't given clear and insightful options. We feel that if women are empowered with knowledge, education and alternatives they can make informed decisions. Please remember I am for Every Woman's right to choose the birth she wants. I am not describing women who have chosen to birth with intervention, I am talking about women who were taken by surprise and faced with decisions with out the ability of giving informed consent.
Why a Doula? To help remind you of the details of your birth plan, make decisions based on what you have told her you want for your birth, provide techniques and comfort measures to help insure you have the birth you planned for, she will be with you consistently, therefore leaving less room for doubt about what you are experiencing. Doulas can help provide most mothers with the confidence they need to go from 0-10 and from girl to mother.
Here at Every Woman Doulas we are dedicated to helping each mother plan for the birth you desire.
